Saatchi Art Review – What Is It – How To Use It – What I Think Of It

Online galleries and marketplaces have made selling art so much easier. However, it can be hard to decide which of these platforms will work out the best for you and allow you to sell more art.

I have already written the article “Where To Sell Your Art Online” that gives a brief overview of Saatchi Art. However, in this review and in the video above, I not only talk about the Saatchi Art, but I show how to create an account, upload your art, and more.

This is one of many in-depth reviews/how-to videos that I have done. Check out some of my other ones on the following websites:

What is Saatchi Art?

Saatchi Art claims to be the worlds leading online gallery to help you discover and buy from the best-emerging artists around the world. Or, in this case, since you are an artist, it helps you reach customers from all around the world. They have 1.4 million artworks listed, and 94 thousand artists selling on their platform from over 110 countries.

They have sold artworks to collectors in over 80 countries, have over 12 million monthly page views, over 1.1 million social followers, and more!

If you look at these numbers compared to some other online galleries, Saatchi Art definitely beats the competition. These are some impressive numbers. There is always a little give and take with a website like this, they have a lot of traffic but also a lot of artists.

What can I sell on Saatchi Art?

On Saatchi Art, you can sell many different types of artwork including paintings, photography, sculpture, drawings, collages, and more.

You can sell original artworks as well as limited and open edition prints of your work. You can sell physical prints that you produce yourself, or use their Print-on-Demand service to sell prints directly through them. This takes out any production and shipping work for you!

This is pretty standard for most online galleries now.

Does Saatchi Art have a Print-On-Demand Service?

Yes, as mentioned in the previous answer, Saatchi Art does have a quality print-on-demand service. They offer prints in a few different forms and many different sizes.

To read more about the prints and sizes they offer, follow this link: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005080547

Who can sell on Saatchi Art?

You must be at least 18 years of age to sell on Saatchi Art.

How much does it cost to sell on Saatchi Art? Is there a commission fee?

It is FREE to sell on Saatchi Art However, they take a 35% commission on any original artwork sold. This is quite high compared to some other online platforms, however, as they say, it is less than what a physical gallery usually takes.

They set a base price for any print-on-demand products and they allow you to set your profit above and beyond that base price.

How and When Do I Get Paid?

Saatchi Art will pay you in one of three ways. You can be paid by check, wire transfer, or PayPal. Payouts can be requested 7 days after your artwork has been delivered safely to your customer. Once requested, payouts are typically fulfilled in 14 calendar days.

There is now a separate payment page that you will be directed to in order to request a payout. You can use the same login information as your Saatchi Art account to reach this. It can be accessed by clicking on the “Sales Dashboard” in the drop-down menu under your profile name and then clicking on “Access Payout Manager” on that page.

There is a tax form you have to fill out and then the required info depending on your method of receiving payment. The tax form was just a minor inconvenience but isn’t the only site to require such information. This is standard for an international company and should be looked at as being more professional than some other websites.

I personally use the PayPal method for payment and have never had any issues with this.

How Do I Create An Account on Saatchi Art?

Simply click on the “Register” button at the top right of the website page. If you have ever created an account on any other website, it is a similar process. Provide your first and last name, email address, and create a password. They will send you a confirmation email and you are good to go.

In order to receive payments, you will be asked to upload a government-issued photo ID. Some people are afraid to do this. I understand if this is a deal breaker for you.

What Happens When I Sell An Artwork?

When you sell artwork on Saatchi Art, you will be directly notified by email to the email address that you have associated with your account. You can also check your “Sales Dashboard” to see if you have any sales or the status of your sales.

In the email you receive from Saatchi, you will also be directed on how to proceed with shipping your artwork.

They give you this checklist to follow once you have sold an original piece: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003374007

How Do I Ship A Sold Original Artwork?

Shipping is always paid for by the customer. This means that when you are uploading your artwork, it is very important to enter the correct details in terms of how it will be shipped (crate, box, tube, etc), dimensions, and weight. Saatchi uses this information to calculate the shipping rate from your location to the location of the customer.

They will send you a shipping label from a local courier (UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.) to attach to the package after it is packed up. You will then schedule a time for your painting to be picked up either at your residence or business location (whichever you have given as your address). The courier will then come and pick it up so that you don’t have to take the time out of your day to go drop it off.

I have gone through this process with Saatchi Art and I can tell you that it went very smoothly. They were very supportive along the way and everything was shown step by step what to do. No other website I work with has a setup like this.

Though I don’t find it hard to order shipping labels or take the package to the post office myself, this process was also nice.

If you need help packing your art, check out this article on Saatchi Art that takes you step-by-step through the process approved by them: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003365447

What Promotional/Marketing Opportunities Are There On Saatchi Art?

To begin, you are able to add your social media links to your profile so customers can easily follow you on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many more. There are also share buttons on the artwork pages so people can share your art on their social media accounts.

From what I know, there are no paid promotional options like on so many other websites where you can sell art online. Personally, I think this is great.

If you want some help and tips on how to promote yourself for free on Saatchi Art, check out this article from their guidebook: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003489208#Promoting

What is the “Artist’s Handbook”?

The “Artist’s Handbook” is an extensive library filled with not only a guide on how to use Saatchi Art’s website, but it is also filled with tips on how to sell, package, and promote your artwork in general. This is a great resource that not every website will have. Saatchi Art wants to help you be the most professional possible as they are representing you on their website.

If you would like to check it out, follow this link: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us

Do They Have A Mobile App?

The app that they currently have is only for iPhones. Though I am an avid supporter of Apple Computers and Laptops, I have an Android phone so I do not have any experience with their app.

From what I have read, the app allows you to control everything from your phone. That is nice if you are on the run a lot, but personally, I don’t like doing extensive work on my phone.

If you would like more information on the app, you can read about it on their website: https://support.saatchiart.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003373067

What is the Saatchi Art Affiliate Program?

The Saatchi Art Affiliate Program allows you to promote other artists work and receive monetary compensation if something is sold from clicking on a link you shared. The program runs through CJ Affiliates. Depending on what is sold, you will receive between 4-13% commission on what is sold.

For more information or to sign up, follow this link: https://signup.cj.com/member/brandedPublisherSignUp.do?air_refmerchantid=4023958

This affiliate programs is pretty standard to online gallery sites. Some other sites that I have reviewed will also have an affiliate program for if other artists sign-up but Saatchi Art is simply for products. The links that you share are only good for 30-days where on some other sites they are good for much longer (up to 1-year on ArtPal for example).

What do I think of Saatchi Art?

In my opinion, Saatchi Art is a great website where artists can sell their artwork. This website is run and treated more like an actual gallery. Art collectors from around the world use and trust this website to make their purchases of art.

Being such a large platform allows the possibility for more people to see your work. You’ll notice my emphasis on the word possibility. It also can make it more difficult to get seen because the website is so saturated with other artists. You never know who will see your work!

I have had nothing but positive experiences working with Saatchi Art in the couple of years that I have been a member of their site. Their support when an artwork is sold is almost unmatched and I find their website to be pretty user friendly.

All in all, if you are looking to get your artwork in front of more people and don’t mind Saatchi Art taking a cut for helping you find customers, then this website is worth looking into for you. If you already have a solid base of customers (or way to find customers) then a 35% commission is probably too much of a profit that you will be losing.
